Two companies showed up at CES with smartphones they're both billing as the fastest in the world. Those two manufacturers are Motorola and LG who were touting the Motorola Atrix 4G and the LG Optimus 2X, respectively.
Which one is actually faster? We're guessing it won't matter all that much, since both are equipped with similar Tegra 2 processors -- you know, that 1GHz dual-core system on a chip from Nvidia.
If you've been following the smartphone space, the Optimus 2X is probably familiar to you. First announced last December, the handset fits in a 4-inch capacitive touchscreen (800 x 480 resolution), a pair of cameras (8 megapixels in the back, 1.3 megapixels in front), the usual set of connectivity options (aGPS, WiFi, 3G and Bluetooth), an HDMI out (for 1080p video playback), microSD card expansion (up to 32GB) and a 1,500 mAh battery. It runs Android 2.2.
The Motorola Atrix 4G, on the other hand, pairs the powerful CPU with 1GB of RAM and Android 2.2. Despite the 4G in the name, we're not sure if this is LTE since AT&T will be releasing it in the US (most likely, it's HSPA+). Details include a 4-inch capacitive touchscreen, a 5.0 megapixel camera in the rear, a VGA camera in front, the usual roster of connectivity favors, 16GB of built-in storage, a microSD card slot capable of up to 48GB and a huge 1930 mAh battery. It will have fingerprint recognition for security.
Chances are, we're going to see a lot more of very powerful phones such as these throughout the year. These two are the early entrants, though, and will deservedly get a lot of attention.
