According to an email received by an interested customer, the Cricket version of the midrange Kyocera Zio smartphone will receive its long delayed and anticipated update to Android 2.1 (Eclair) next month.
“Thank you for contacting Kyocera Communications Inc. This email message is in response to your inquiry when the firmware update will be made available on your Sanyo Zio M6000 phone.
The firmware update will be available on February 2011.”
The Kyocera Zio was originally announced by the manufacturer during CTIA 2010 with Android 1.5 (Donut) as its operating system, with carriers placing orders for the device such as the aforementioned Cricket and MetroPCS.
While Cricket and MetroPCS ordered their versions with Android 1.6 (Cupcake), Sprint ordered theirs with Android 2.1, as Kyocera made units available with Android 2.1 for carrier purchase available later that summer. Cricket launched its version in August with 1.6 and Metro PCS canceled their version after multiple delays in the fall.
