Apple iPhone 4 Surges In Record Smartphone Sales

The new normal in the mobile realm is quickly becoming the smartphone. Soon it will not be enough to have a cell phone without a processor and an operating system. Read on to see the new smartphone sales numbers and how the iPhone 4 is leading the pack.

Apple has got to be one of the best in the mobile world at getting a buzz going over their products. They have a strong following, and rightly so, they put out some cool products. Their iPhone 4 is currently in third place in “units sold” from the third quarter of this year. They are behind the newcomer, Android. The word “Android” can just as easily be seen as the word “Google”, since Google is the controlling force behind Android. It is debatable if Google can be considered to be selling smartphones. They only sell the software to run them. They have had one product of their own, called the Nexus One. Nevertheless, many people count Android as being a part of “smartphone sales” because of their system being present on those smartphones being sold.

Who is at number one ? Symbian occupies that space, and is a truly open source platform once owned by Nokia. Symbian is still supported and used by Nokia, but not controlled by it. The total number of Symbian units sold up to the third quarter of 2010 was 400 million units, of which 100 million were sold from 2009 in the third quarter. Nokia is expanding into other variations of the Symbian platform to better serve their smartphone users. The recent Nokia N8 broke pre order sales records and runs the Symbian^3 operating system.

The iPhone 4 broke all previous Apple sales records, selling 1.7 million handsets in three days. That equals out to 566,667 smartphone sales per day. The unfortunate iPhone 4 antenna problem was discovered soon after. It ended well with Apple taking care of the problem after some “back and forth” between Apple and their clients. The next three weeks would result in Apple selling three million iPhone 4 handsets.

Android has has some good success with their operating system. The CEO claims that 200,000 smartphones are being shipped per day with the Android system running them. A recently popular HTC model, the Evo 4G sold out wildly, with people waiting in line for it similar to Apple customers for the iPhone 4. The HTC Evo runs Android and was the first smartphone in the United States to use the WiMaX ( 4G ) band. Google may try again with their own smartphone setup with the Samsung Nexus S.

Blackberry has been faithfully cranking out smartphones, upgrading their line with more power and features. They bring in a respectable fourth place among smartphone makers and make their own operating system. The latest for smartphones is the OS 6.0, which they have begun installing in their latest models. They are gearing up for an important change by beginning to install QNX software in their tablet and their smartphones. They sold 10.5 million smartphones in the first quarter of this year. That is a 46 percent increase over last year.

Smartphones sales are forecast to overtake the sales of regular cellphones in the near future. They are expected to put a large dent in the sales of regular computers, both PC and Macs.
