As reported here on Cell Phones Etc. and across the Web, here’s your daily brief on what happened in the world of mobile phones this Thursday, April 7th, 2011.
HTC’s market capitalization reaches $33.8b, overshadows Nokia and RIM
Nokia still trumps HTC is terms of handset sales, but as far as market valuation goes, HTC has just surpassed Espoo. HTC’s stock actually rose by 33% this year, a stark contrast to the beleaguered Finns which shrunk by 19%. As a result, HTC managed to overtake Nokia, and is now the 3rd most valuable smartphone maker next only to Apple and Samsung.

Gartner: Android grabbing over 38 percent of smartphone market in 2011 on Symbian’s demise
Android is on the rise. And if you do’t believe us, maybe Gartner’s new report will make you change you’re mind. According their calculations, Android will see continued growth this year at the expense of Symbian, and will reach an all-time high by 2012 where it’s expected to take control of 49.2% of the market. Of course, these are all just predictions and nothing’s certain especially in the highly competitive mobile phone industry. But one thing’s for certain, a lot of analysts are optimistic about the future of Android.

Videotron is first in Canada to officially release the Nexus S
Beating everyone to the punch, Videotron is the first Canadian carrier to roll out the much anticipated Nexus S. They have theirs retailing for $149.95 if you get it on a $40/month plan or more, or $529.95 off-contract. It’s still not as cheap as what Rogers’ is offering, but at least it’s no available, which more than what we can say abbot the Nexus S on Rogers.

Apple to release iOS 4.3.2 in the next two weeks
Yes, that’s right. Apple is reportedly cooking up yet another point upgrade to iOS 4.3, which will reportedly come with some enhancements, and addresses several bugs and security features. And I guess by security features, that also includes the exploit currently being used by the new set of untethered jailbreak tools. Hopefully not, but only time will tell. We’ll see in two weeks time.

Samsung: The Galaxy S II is still set for April launch
After reports of the Galaxy S II being delayed surfaced yesterday, Samsung sent out a tweet reassuring everyone that the S II is still on for an April launch. They followed it up, however, with another one stating that “it will be gradually rolled out in each market,” which could mean that initial stock of the new Galaxy S will be low. Anyway, what’s really important is a confirmed local release date, which, unfortunately, we’ve yet to see. Hopefully, once it finally rolls out, we’ll be getting more info as to when we can expect it to hit the Canadian market.
