Reason Nintendo Really Don’t Want To Sell Phones

There are enough candidates for famous last words in this CNN interview with Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime to fill up an ambitious Facebook quotations box. And all of them are on the subject of why exactly Nintendo won’t be producing or selling a handheld device that’s also a phone.

“We don’t see that as an opportunity. Phones are utilities. Phones are not by definition entertainment devices,” Reggie Fils-Aime explained. “From Nintendo’s perspective, we don’t see that we have a competitive advantage in telephony,” Well you sure as shooting don’t have an advantage in the media player market, and you’ve added that capability to the DS all the same. To say nothing of web browsing or photography. Some things you don’t need to do well, you just need to do. “We believe that we will earn our way into someone’s pocket without having to offer that (phone capability) as an additional factor,” he went on. Something tells me that if it turns out they can’t, they won’t just pack up and go home.
