Company surpasses previous record for first day handset sales in two hours as US consumers race to secure device on alternative network
US operator Verizon said it recorded the most successful first day of sales in its history when it took orders for the Apple iPhone 4 yesterday (February 3) ahead of its launch on the network on February 10.
It did not release any official sales figures for the ‘one day only’ event.
The device has previously only been available on the AT&T network but the news it would become available on Verizon caused great excitement in the US, mainly due to consumer frustration at the poor reception available from AT&T.
Verizon chief executive and president Dan Mead said: “ It was a very exciting day.
“In just our first two hours, we had already sold more phones than any first day launch in our history.
“When you consider these initial orders were placed between the hours of 3 am and 5 am, it is an incredible success story.
Verizon will open its 2000 stores across the us at 7am on February 10 in anticipation of more strong sales on the first day of official sales.
