There has been a lot of confusion about the future of Android for the mobile devices in particular as the most updated version (Honeycomb) has been virtuously touted as an OS for the tablet devices. Thanks to the ongoing MWC that the picture is now getting a little clearer as Eric Schmidt clarified that the next big Android update for mobile devices will be the Ice Cream and it will be decoded as version 3.1.
Schmidt also mentioned that the next version of Android will combine the current Gingerbread release for phones (Android version 2.3 and 2.4) with Honeycomb for tablets (version 3.0) into a single platform. All this implies that we shouldn’t expect to see Honeycomb running on phones anytime soon, and it will indeed be the Ice Cream which will bring in major changes for Android sporting phones.
Decipher it furthermore, and all this means whatever Honeycomb magic you see running on the tablets will be seen on the smartphones as well courtesy of Ice Cream or Android 3.1, whatever you may call it.
