You are probably aware that there is some controversy over location tracking with both the iOS platform and the Android platform, Apple is expected to release iOS 4.3.3 to fix this issue, However when it comes to Android it appears the Korean police have raided the Google offices in the country.
According to Apple Insider, Reuters is reporting that Korean police raided the Google offices on Tuesday on the suspicion that Google has collected personal data without the permission of users.
Apparently a Korean copper said… “We suspect AdMob collected personal location information without consent or approval from the Korean Communication Commission.”
Word has it a spokesperson for Google has confirmed the police raid and also that Google is cooperating with the investigation. The Korean police also raided the offices of local portal Daum Communications due to similar suspicions.
Computer science professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Kim Kwang-jo says… “Every technology has a flip side. Location-based services benefit customers by helping them find nearby restaurants, gas stations and other places with their smartphones. But it could potentially violate consumer privacy. There are loopholes in location-based services, and companies should get consent from customers to collect location data.”
Well I’m an Android user and as far as I am aware no one has come out and asked me for my concent in collecting location data, have you?
